Class News (16.9.22)
Thank you for a super second week in Year 5. You’ve worked hard this week in Maths investigating the place value of 7 digit numbers, writing them in both words and digits and identifying the different value of each digit and comparing them with other similar numbers.
In our English we’ve explored a super narrative book called ‘The Wolves in the Walls’ written by Neil Gaiman. You’ve predicted what could happen from examining two pictures before we even read the story and then what could happen next from different characters’ points of view having read half of the book. I’m looking forward to you writing a review next week identifying what you liked, disliked and even puzzled you in this scary but exciting story.
In RE we’re exploring and writing about the qualities that God has given us in order for us to be more like him. You’ve shown a lovely sense of responsibility and determination to uphold those qualities in your lives.
In Science we learnt about the movement of the Earth as it orbits the Sun and its relationship to the moon by demonstrating it using human models for the planets and the star in the playground. We learnt that they are all roughly spherical and that the Earth and Moon orbit in an anti-clockwork direction.
The week has been a sad week too as we have commemorated the death of her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. In Year 5 we’ve celebrated her achievements over the years by focusing on 1962 to 1972. There were many significant events such as the music of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones as well as the work of people like Martin Luther King Jr. However, we focused on the historic moment when Neil Armstrong walked on the moon in 1969. This event had links to the Queen because she sent a special message for the astronauts to take with them into space and then invited them to Buckingham Palace on their return. Since Earth and Space is our Science topic, we decided to design and make special rockets named after the Queen which we then showed to the whole school in our special Assembly today to celebrate the life of Queen Elizabeth II. We will put these on display in the school along with some special prayers we wrote for her Majesty.
Finally, many congratulations to our Stars and writer of the week! Have a super weekend and I look forward to seeing you next week in class.
