Class News (9.9.22)
This was our first week back in Year 5 and I think that we’ve had a very busy time.
We had our Topic launch on Tuesday and we travelled back in time to Ancient Egypt and discovered the importance of the river Nile to the ancient Egyptians. We made a timeline of events before CE1 when Jesus was born and discovered that the Egyptians first arrived in the Nile valley 7,500 years before his birth. We became archaeologists and examined photos of artefacts to try and understand what they were and how ancient Egyptians used them. Our Ancient Egyptian display has been very popular too and everyone has enjoyed looking at the copies of artefacts and books which have helped with both our History and Art lessons this week.
We’re busy creating some excellent portraits of ourselves in the style of an ancient Egyptian profile portrait using oil pastels and collage as well.
Next week we’ll be starting our Maths and English work in more detail. In the former we’re looking at place value with numbers up to 1 million and in the latter we’re exploring a super book called ‘The Wolves in the Walls’ by Neil Gaiman and using its ideas to help us write a similar story. In RE we’ve learnt about class saint, St Josephine Bakhita, and we’ll looking at the Topic of Ourselves and understanding that our uniqueness is central to our wellbeing.
In Science we’ll learning about the movement of the Earth as it orbits the Sun and its relationship to the moon. I hope you get a chance to have a look at the NASA website (www.nasa.gov) to see pictures of the Earth and solar system. It’s a very exciting time to learn about Space.
It’s been such a lovely first week so it was very difficult to choose Stars of the week. Congratulations to those chosen and to our writer of the week too. There’s plenty of time throughout the term for everyone to be chosen so keep doing your best.
Have a super weekend and I look forward to seeing you next week in class.
