Autumn Term 1:
RE: In RE this term, we are discussing the theme of Creation and Covenant by exploring the first account of the Creation in Genesis and reflecting on the idea that Creation is a gift from God and that we are made in his image and likeness. Through scripture, psalms and Church teaching, we will deepen our understanding of God’s goodness and the call to care for the world and each other.
English: In English this term we are studying the lovely story of ‘Mini Rabbit Not Lost’ by John Bond. This narrative will help us to write our own short story by revising the use of story shapes when writing a plot with particular emphasis on the beginnings and endings of our stories. In addition, we are revising our use of co-ordinating and subordinating conjunctions to help us develop our sentence structures along with the use of interesting verbs and adjectives to develop the plot using the past and past progressive tenses. After this, we will be writing a non-chronological report about our dream/fantasy jobs based on the text, ‘Incredible Jobs (You’ve Probably Never Heard Of)’ by Natalie Labarre. We will practise how to write paragraphs with headings and subheadings as well as how to use captions, labels, diagrams and other devices found in non-fiction texts.
Maths: In Maths this term our focus is on place value, counting on and back tens and hundreds bridging through 100s and rounding. In addition, we are revising times tables learnt in Year 2 before moving on to the times tables for Year 3 as well as mental fluency in both addition and subtraction before we move onto written addition and subtraction.
Science: In Science we're using scientific language to help us compare and group different kinds of rocks based on their appearance and physical properties. We are learning how these different rocks were formed and whether they are igneous, sedimentary or metamorphic in origin. In addition, we will investigate how fossils are formed and discuss the work of the nineteenth century palaeontologist, Mary Anning.
History: In History this term we are stepping way back into prehistoric times by asking the question ‘Would you prefer to live in the Stone Age, Bronze Age or Iron Age?’ To help us answer this question, we will investigate how long ago prehistoric man lived by creating timelines going back 2.5 million years ago, as well as studying and comparing each Age by examining any rare surviving artefacts that have been discovered by archaeologists.
Art: In Art, we are exploring prehistoric cave paintings and then, using natural products such as flowers, leaves and spices like cinnamon and turmeric, we will create our own paintings of animals on a textured background to resemble a cave painting.
Spanish: As our first introduction to Spanish, we are learning how to say hello and introduce ourselves as well as learning other forms of greetings. The focus is on oral pronunciation of these greetings as well as matching spoken words to written captions.
PE: In PE we are studying gymnastics in the hall and also developing our ball skills learnt in KS1 by focusing on sending, catching and dribbling with the main focus on tracking as used in target, invasion, striking & fielding and net & wall games.
Music: In Music we're singing with drone and ostinato accompaniments and performing melodies on chime bars as well as open string melodies on ukeleles from our own graphic scores.
PSHE: In PSHE,we are discussing the theme of ‘Being In My World’ by thinking about our goals and by celebrating what we are good at. We will have opportunities to discuss our feelings, treat each other kindly and work together responsibly.
